Behind the scenes with Resume
Man
On Wednesday, June 7th and Thursday, June 8th, 2000,
I was in Cincinnati, Ohio shooting commercials for jobopps.net. I
played the part of Resume Man.
The following is a pictorial "Behind the Scenes" featurette.
This is the lovely Vernon Manor Hotel where the two representatives
of Sullivan St. Claire agency and I were roomed. The hotel was built
in 1927 and, as you can see, is a grand building, indeed.
Great big hotel...itsy bitsy room. No matter, it had a TV and
an air conditioner, so I was happy.
Wednesday morning, the first day of shooting. Here is the crew
unloading the equipment at Kaldi's Coffee Shop and Bookstore for the first
interior shots.
Here is the bar inside the coffee shop where we shot the scene where
I bite the gooey donut and ask the guy next to me, "Are those the want
ads?"
After the interior shoot, we went down the street and around the corner
for an exterior shot at an old 50's style diner. Here the crew sets
up outside with the 35mm film camera.
This is preparing for a close-up of the cook snatching the "help wanted"
sign out of the window as Resume Man approaches. The guy to the right
with the silvery round thing is bouncing light onto the sign. The
sun was starting to go down and a shadow was falling across the top of
the sign.
This is how I get into the Resume Man costume. The middle opens
like a big, zippered book. I slide in, step into the "leg holes",
put my arms and face thru the holes on the front, then the whole thing
is zipped up around me.
Here I am in all my Resume Man glory, posing for the camera.
This is the scene where I walk up to the diner right before the cook snatches
away the "help wanted" sign (which was shot earlier).
It is now Thursday. We've gone to downtown Cincinnati, where
we're preparing to shoot a scene at a hot dog vendor's stand. The
big purple thing being unloaded from the truck is the Resume Man costume
in its protective sleeve.
The camera is set and we're preparing to shoot the scene where I ask
the vendor, "do you have a health plan?" The vendor, by the way,
is not an actor...he's the REAL hot dog vendor. NOW, he's a star.
The fellow to the right is the sound man.
We've moved back to the area near the coffee shop. I'm about
to walk towards the camera so they can get shots of me looking dejected.
They'll use these shots to separate some of the vignettes.
Here I am in the Resume Man Suit...in the last few moments of shooting.
I have just gotten hit in the face with a bucket of water. When this
scene is added to a shot of a car driving thru a pothole, it'll give the
impression that I got drenched by the car. Ah, the magic of film.
After getting hit with water, the costume is immediately dried off.
You'll notice its the COSTUME that gets all the TLC, not yours truly.
Okay, okay...I'M expendable...the COSTUME costs MONEY!
Here is a shot of the whole crew after the wrap of the last scene.
I'm working on getting everybody's name in this picture so I can add them
later. Okay...so I have a TERRIBLE memory for names.
Okay...that's it! Its time to head HOME!
